Overland AI builds software that lets military vehicles drive themselves across terrain that normally requires a human driver. The company spun out of the University of Washington and was founded by robotics researchers Byron Boots and Stephanie Bonk. Its main platform, called OverDrive, gives ground vehicles the ability to move and maneuver autonomously in rough terrain, whether that is dirt roads, forests, or open ground.
What makes the company interesting is its focus on the hardest version of autonomy. Most self driving work happens on paved streets with maps and clear lanes. Overland AI is tackling the opposite problem, vehicles that have to move through messy, unpredictable environments where GPS may not work and the terrain constantly changes. JB
