Drone company Quantum Systems is a classic case of how a hardware maker built for commercial purposes found hockey stick growth after pivoting to defence. The company has been around for more than a decade but spent most of those years focused on verticals like agriculture. The war in Ukraine compelled the German startup to think about how it could help, and it became a key player in reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence. Defence is now the company’s primary business, and while it doesn’t have plans to build kinetic systems — that is what Stark was founded for — it is expanding beyond the air. Recent acquisitions of Fernride and Hacker Motor indicate a ground vehicle strategy, while a 60% stake in Estonian optical sensor company HEVI Optronics and development partnership with Ukraine’s Frontline Robotics speaks to its manufacturing muscle.
