Texas-based Venus Aerospace was founded by Sassie Duggleby and propulsion scientist Dr. Andrew Duggleby, and its focus is the rotating detonation rocket engine, a design that has been studied for decades but only recently built at usable scale.
The idea behind the engine is simple: instead of the steady burn used in traditional rocket engines, the fuel detonates in a continuous circular wave, which can produce more thrust with better efficiency. In 2025 the company flew a test vehicle using this approach, one of the first real demonstrations of a high thrust rotating detonation engine outside the lab. What makes Venus Aerospace interesting is that it sits in the narrow space between aviation and space launch. The same propulsion system could power hypersonic aircraft that cross the globe in a fraction of the current time, or serve as a new generation rocket engine. If the technology proves reliable, it would mark the first real shift in rocket propulsion since the engines developed during the Apollo era. JB
