One of the startup sailing to for a breakthrough in hypersonic missiles, Castelion is betting on this tech being an important part of the next gen of defence not just because it has the potential to be more effective, but also less expensive. Ironically, it’s built up a pretty huge war chest itself to see that play out. So while manufacturing Mach 5+ weapons remains a deep tech challenge, the US-based startup has significant gas in the tank to get there. The three founders hail from SpaceX, so they understand and know how to build moonshots into businesses. It recently inked a $50M deal with the US Navy and is reportedly planning to launch a version of its “Blackbeard” missile from supersonic aircraft in the near future. IL
