Foundational medical breakthroughs are a key component of resilience: just as a missile programme can help protect a country from adversaries, innovations in drugs and health are a defence of their own. They help countries stand more autonomously; they contribute to industry; and they lay the groundwork for developing vaccines and other protections against bioweapons and public health crises. Isomorphic Labs, a spin out of Google-owned DeepMind, wants to build an AI-based drug discovery platform. Founder Demis Hassabis is very bullish on the prospects, perhaps for good reason: he won the Nobel Prize for his work on DeepMind’s AlphaFold protein prediction AI, and Isomorphic earlier this year unveiled IsoDDE, which it says outperforms AlphaFold3 in accuracy by a factor of more than 2.
