At just over 1 year old, Munich-based Stark is not your average early-stage defence tech startup. The company was effectively spun out of another drone company, Quantum Systems, to build kinetic UAVs — something the older startup would not develop itself. And in a case of timing being everything, Stark’s business has taken off, with systems sold not just to Ukraine but also militaries across Europe marching double time to modernise their artilleries. Both Stark and its big rival Helsing have had their stumbles, but they each recently secured huge wins with major contracts for Germany’s Bundeswehr that could reach into the billions for each of them over the coming years, and they are both securing huge funding rounds to continue building out what could effectively become Europe’s own raft of sovereign “Neo-Primes.” IL
