Neros gets a $450M helping hand, in the form of a loan from the US government

Debt will be conditional on the $2.5B startup meeting certain financial, technical and other requirements

Neros, the US-based startup with ambitions to produce small dual-use drones at scale that are US-made but still low-cost, has received a potential boost of financial endorsement by way of a big loan from the United States’ defence department.

The Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) confirmed a conditional loan commitment for $450 million, intended to be used to finance the startup’s domestic manufacturing capacity, development of ground control systems, and to source components including motors, radios, flight electronics, sensors, and batteries.

The loan is part of the US government’s wider strategy to expand US defence drone production and procurement, also known as Executive Order 14307, Unleashing American Drone Dominance.

The debt funding, if successful, will come on the heels of Neros closing a significant Series C of $250 million in August 2026. That equity round — co-led by Sequoia Capital and American Strategic Technology Fund (ASTF) with Interlagos, Valor Equity Partners, Allen & Company, Thiel Capital, Spark Capital, and Figma’s Dylan Field participating — valued the startup at $2.5 billion.

But the $450 million loan is not a done deal: it will be conditional on the startup completing a lengthy set of additional steps before financial close. These include “satisfying various financial, legal, technical, investment, due diligence and other requirements,” the OSC noted in its statement.

Neros contracts with the US government, and the debt funding is likely being put in place to support meeting those orders — highlighting one of the issues of contracting with startups: sometimes they do not have the funds or infrastructure in place to meet the procurement orders that they have secured.

A case in point: in late September 2026, Neros received a $100 million order, made via the Drone Dominance Program, for 14,000 Archer AI first-person viewer drones. Notably, Neros said the deal also included an additional 800 drones “reallocated from other competitors who could not meet the production deadline for their orders.”

“Neros ships”, CTO Olaf Hichwa (who co-founded the company with CEO Soren Monroe-Anderson) noted simply when the company shipped 2,400 drones intended for use in Ukraine earlier this year. However, it should also be noted that Neros’ main drone in the $100 million deal, the Archer AI, has yet to ship.

It is coming, the company promises. Neros’ unique selling point up to now has been that it focuses on designing and producing US-made small drones, equipped with non-Chinese-sourced components, at price points estimated to be $5,000 or less per unit. (This is in comparison to some other US-based suppliers. Anduril, for example, makes models that cost between tens of thousands and tens of millions of dollars.)

The company’s Series C announcement noted that proceeds of the round would go towards the Archer AI FPV drone as well as another model, the Bandit interceptor drone (for countering Class 2 and Class 3 Shaheds). These are both due to be “deployed in theaters of combat by the end of 2026,” the company said in August.

“Neros has already demonstrated an ability to design, manufacture, and deliver exceptional small unmanned aircraft systems,” said David A. Lorch, director of the OSC and senior advisor to Deputy Secretary of War Steve Feinberg. “OSC’s investment will turbocharge Neros’ ability to manufacture drones and components critical for the production of drone systems.”

We have reached out to Neros for further comment and will update as we learn more.
