The race is on around the world to build hypersonics, the next big step in missile development that promise super-fast, long-distance travel more likely to evade traditional defences — potentially at a cheaper price than missiles, which can cost from millions to hundreds of millions of dollars. The aim of Hypersonica, whose German founders met while studying engineering and physics at Oxford, is to build Europe’s first, sovereign hypersonic missile program. The startup has hit some key milestones so far and has secured some important investors, but as with other efforts, challenges remain around heat control, communications and guidance at Mach 5+ high speeds. Still one to watch. IL
