One year in: What we’ve learned about the Resilience Media audience

Resilience Media readers sit at the intersection of defense and innovation, and are located across global defence hubs.

In the last 12 months, Resilience Media expanded its newsroom and shifted from a Substack newsletter to a standalone website publishing numerous original defence tech stories per week. Replatforming to our own site gave us room to grow alongside Resilience Conference (which is returning to London October 5-6). Now, having moved outside the walled garden of Substack, we have a clearer picture of our growing community of readers.

That picture turned out to be even more interesting than we expected.

Our readers sit at the intersection of defence and innovation. Founders building hardware and software, policymakers shaping procurement and policy, military leaders, and investors trying to work out how the next decade of defence spending will be deployed.

Where they’re reading from tells another interesting story.

While a majority of Resilience Media staff are based in Europe, our growing audience, currently at tens of thousands of monthly readers, is heavily skewed toward the United States, as well as throughout Europe.

We see consistent audience traffic from defence hubs like Phoenix, Arizona, home to a dense aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing base. Readers also find us from Huntsville, Alabama, where missile defence and US Army aviation programs employ much of the city, and from Washington, DC, where policy gets written and budgets are decided. We see steady readership out of Hawthorne, California, where commercial space and launch companies like SpaceX have set up shop, and across Texas, from Austin’s startup scene to the test ranges and bases scattered through the rest of the state. Des Moines, Iowa shows up, too. Defence policy is a major topic on the US Presidential campaign trail.

Outside defence hubs, our audience overlaps with the broader tech world. We see consistent readership from Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Austin, and New York City, a sign that defence tech has cemented itself as a major sector in the traditional tech space.

Across the Atlantic, the pattern holds just as clearly. London and Paris have strong representation, alongside Munich and Amsterdam, cities where the defence industry, finance, and engineering talent overlap. Helsinki and the Nordics have also become a regular presence. And along the Eastern Flank, Resilience Media readership runs especially deep: Warsaw and the rest of Poland, Tallinn and the Baltics more broadly, and Ukraine, where the inspiration for this publication began.

One year into this new chapter, the geography of our readership has told us this: the people building and funding the future of defence are globally distributed and paying close attention to each other.

We’re glad to have you among them.

With nearly two decades of experience in the tech industry, she has been instrumental in shaping conversations around innovation and resilience in the face of global challenges. Prior to founding Resilience Media, Leslie served as the Director of Events at TechCrunch, where she led the production of the renowned TechCrunch Disrupt conferences across major tech hubs including New York City, San Francisco, London, and Berlin, as well as a suite of events in Nairobi, Lagos, Seoul, and Tel Aviv. The initiative was launched during the inaugural Resilience Conference in London, aiming to foster collaboration between the tech sector and national security communities. Resilience Media has since become a pivotal resource, offering in-depth analysis, founder profiles, and policy discussions pertinent to the defence tech ecosystem.
