German police have arrested nationals named Xuejun C. and Hua S. on suspicion of spying for China. German authorities have accused them of stealing information on technologies associated with the German military. The arrest occurred on Wednesday, May 20 in Munich.
Authorities accused the couple of working “for a Chinese intelligence agency.”
The couple allegedly contacted professors at German universities and researchers at various German institutions, focusing on aerospace, computer science, and AI. They posed as “employees of an automobile manufacturer,” said authorities.
The couple invited researchers and scientists to China to offer paid lectures to “civilian audiences.” Instead, they were placed with groups of “state-owned arms manufacturers,” authorities said.
Authorities said that ten other people, potentially the researchers in question, are being questioned as witnesses.
